China's official standard legally restricts the “Pu-erh” name to tea grown and processed within designated regions of Yunnan, so tea from Myanmar's Kokang (Guo Gan) region cannot officially carry the name. That said, the ancient tea trees of Kokang are part of the same ecosystem as nearby Yunnan, separated only by a modern political border, and many pu-erh enthusiasts consider tea from the region pu-erh in every practical sense, even if it can't be legally labeled as such.
