How to Brew Tea Western Style

Western-style brewing is a simple way to make loose-leaf tea: steep the leaves in a teapot or infuser, then remove or strain them once the tea reaches the desired strength. It requires no special teaware – just a teapot, an infuser basket, or even a simple strainer.

Not to be confused with "Grandpa style" brewing, where the leaves are left in a cup or jar and topped up with hot water throughout the day. Western brewing separates the leaves from the liquid. This gives you more control over strength and timing, and it's the easiest way to get a consistently good cup if you're new to loose-leaf tea.

Quick steps:

  1. Heat water to the right temperature for your tea type.

  2. Add loose-leaf tea to your teapot or infuser (1g per every 70-100ml of water, adjusted to taste).

  3. Pour the water over the leaves and steep for the recommended time (3-5 minutes)

  4. Strain or remove the leaves, then pour and enjoy.
