Handmade "Flower Bud" Jianzhan Tenmoku Tea Cup

$49.00

Jian Zhan pottery has a long, fascinating history. The craft originated in Jianyang, Fujian, during the Song Dynasty. It was once the preferred teaware of emperors and scholars. With its distinctive, gorgeous glazes ranging from deep black to shining blue, it has the natural ability to enhance the tea-drinking experience.

Due to the high iron oxide content in the glaze, Jianzhan teacups retain heat quite well. Moreover, the unique glaze refines the tea. When hot water comes into contact with the iron-rich glaze, the glaze releases iron ions that remove harsh chlorides, soften the water, neutralize tannins, and enhance a mellow mouthfeel. Side by side with porcelain, a Jianzhan cup produces a noticeably sweeter taste and a more pronounced fragrance. – Something you can experience only with authentic Jian Zhan.

While suitable for all teas, it is usually particularly beneficial for deeper-oxidized Oolongs, Black tea, and Pu-erh, where it can bring out richer aromas.

When the tradition of powdered tea (similar to matcha) got lost in China, Jian Zhan pottery disappeared along with it — except in Japan, where it became known as Tenmoku and remained deeply valued. In recent decades, Chinese artisans have revived this lost craft, bringing it back to its birthplace.

This Jian Zhan tea cup is fully handmade by Yang Jia Jang, a National First-Level Potter and an Inheritor of Intangible Cultural Heritage from Jianyang. Master Yang studied under the famous potter Sun Fukun. When we met Yang Laoshi, we were moved by her dedication and deep love for the art of Jian Zhan pottery making. Unlike many modern Jian Zhan cups, which tend to be thick, her cups are exceptionally thin, making them very elegant and pleasant to hold.

This cup's shape is called "Flower Bud" (花骨朵 – Hua Gu Duo). It is inspired by the gentle curve of a blossoming bud. In Chinese tradition, the flower bud represents new beginnings, hope, potential, and resilience – the promise of growth and transformation.
