Experience the timeless art of ChaNoYu, the Japanese tea ritual, and indulge in the flavors of Matcha – the most renowned Japanese green tea. The centerpiece of this ritual is Chawan, the Japanese tea bowl, which holds the essence of the tea experience within its elegant form.
This Kizeto Oribe Chawan brings together two classic Japanese ceramic styles in one beautifully balanced bowl. The warm yellow glaze of Kizeto and the deep green tones of Oribe come together in peaceful conversation. The design is expressive but grounded, bold but not loud — the piece that draws you in the more you use it.
The bowl has a soft, organic shape, slightly uneven in a way that is intentional, not accidental. It's comfortable to hold, with a generous open form allowing space for the matcha to be whisked freely. The glaze is full of character: yellow ochre with dark iron spots peeking through in places and that unmistakable Oribe green pooling at the rim and along the shoulder. The spots and brushmarks feel playful as if the potter is enjoying the rhythm of making. No two bowls turn out exactly the same, which is part of what makes it so satisfying to use.
In the name Kizeto (黄瀬戸), Ki (黄) means "yellow", and "Seto" (瀬戸) refers to the Seto kilns, one of the historic Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. Kizeto is known for its warm yellow glaze, often with green or iron-brown accents, and was commonly used in tea ware during the Momoyama period. Oribe (織部) is the 16th-century tea master Furuta Oribe, who was very spontaneous and expressive. Oribe was known for his asymmetrical forms, vivid green copper glaze, and free, often abstract brushwork. It was a break from the more restrained styles of earlier Japanese ceramics.
This chawan is a good example of how Japanese ceramics often embrace imperfection – not as a flaw but as a reflection of process and individuality. You can see the marks of the hand that shaped the bowl and the glaze that moved and settled in its way during firing.
Kizeto Oribe chawan feels like an invitation to slow down, whisk a bowl of matcha, and enjoy the moment.
