A gaiwan is the central part of Gong Fu style tea, used for infusing tea leaves. The components are a bowl, lid, and saucer. We use a gaiwan to warm up tea, smell its aroma, and observe the tea leaves unfurling.
A porcelain gaiwan is good to use with light teas, like green, white, yellow teas, and light oolongs.
The porcelain texture is not as porous as the Yixing clay gaiwan. Instead of absorbing, porcelain highlights the subtle, gentle flavors of the lighter teas. Against the white background, the light tea liquor and beautiful unfurling tea leaves will be a pleasant sight.
The Chinese characters that have been hand-painted on this delicate porcelain gaiwan represent the tranquil journey that is Gong Fu Cha, the Chinese tea ceremony.
