Handmade Wood-fired "Rough Diamond" Gaiwan

$96.00

We proudly present this unique gaiwan, made from high-iron content clay from Dehua. A fusion of tradition and innovation, its design is inspired by a diamond's facets, giving the bowl a unique visual distinction. Rotate it under the light, and you will notice how the different angles reflect and play with it in ways that make the bowl seem like it's dancing with the light around it. The faceted structure adds a raw, industrial touch to the traditional shape, making it a stunning piece of art.

A Jie

The gaiwan was crafted using the traditional wood-firing method, a centuries-old practice in producing Chinese ceramics and porcelain. Wood firing only uses natural wood as a burner. This way, the only external control of the temperature and ash deposition remains the skills and experience of the kiln master. This unpredictability results in each piece obtaining its own unique glaze, color, and, ultimately, character — no two are exactly alike. (It is also the reason for a very high scrapping rate that might exceed 80%.) The interaction between the clay, the fire, and the remaining ash creates unique textures and natural glazing that can't be replicated in gas or electric kilns. This method is time-consuming and labor-intensive, but the results are worth it for those who appreciate craftsmanship and tradition.

Its 70ml volume makes it ideal for solo tea sessions where you can enjoy your tea in peaceful solitude. It’s also perfect for those special teas where you only have a few grams left or for those teas that are so precious that brewing them in a larger vessel would feel wasteful. The smaller size encourages you to really pay attention to the taste progression as the tea evolves with each steep. This gaiwan can be used with A Jie's matching cup that fits the brewed tea perfectly – no need for a Gong Dao Bei.

A Jie, the artist behind this creation, has over 11 years of experience in ceramic art. A friend introduced us to A Jie during our visit to Fujian province. A Jie's studio blends contemporary creative energy, Zen-inspired minimalism, and elegant Eastern aesthetics. Surrounded by both traditional and modern influences, A Jie creates works that represent the future of Chinese tea culture – based on tradition but looking ahead in time, expanding the shapes and style of ceramic and porcelain design and aesthetics.

A Jie's studio

While sipping a cup of rock tea in his studio, A Jie introduced us to the importance of using high-quality clay, the trials and successes of the creative process, and the inspiration behind his work. Each piece he produces is one of a kind and embodies years of practice, experience, and inspiration. We're happy to present A Jie's works to tea friends and lovers; his creative spirit and the uniqueness of the production process turn this gaiwan into a prized possession that will accompany your tea ritual.
