Yixing Clay Teapot, ZiSha
ZiSha clay from the delta of Yangtze River, Yixing, has excellent porosity and heat retaining properties that significantly improve the taste of tea when compared to tea made in glass, porcelain or glazed teapots. The clay is made of the mixture of kaolin, quartz, and mica, with a high content of iron oxide, and has a somewhat sandy texture. The steps needed to prepare the clay are quite lengthy and have been traditionally regarded as a trade secret.
The body of this ZiSha Yixing clay teapot resembles the full round face of a girl. The spout looks like a mouth, gentle and graceful. The teapot's handle looks like a lady's elegant hair bun. For these reasons, this teapot is called 'Xi Shi' – by the name of one of ancient China’s great beauties.
The teapot's quality is easily determined by its airtightness. Fill up the teapot with water. Press the tiny hole on the lid, or close the nose of the teapot, turn the teapot upside down, and you will see that no water will leak.
