This matcha set includes a wide and tall matcha bowl in the Hagi Celadon style, a bamboo whisk (chasen), and a bamboo scoop (chashaku). It's a beautiful and practical setup for preparing matcha the traditional way, with ample space to whisk properly and tools that do the job efficiently.
Hagi ware (萩焼 – Hagi-yaki) is regarded as one of the most prestigious styles for the tea ceremony, ranked in the proverb "First Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu" (一楽二萩三唐津). While traditional Hagi is often known for its milky white or loquat-colored glazes, this chawan features a Celadon (Seiji) glaze, overlaying the soft characteristic of Hagi with the cool, jade-like hues of celadon, resulting in a vibrant turquoise-blue.
The surface of the bowl is defined by fine crackling (貫入 – Kannyu), a signature trait of Hagi ware that allows the glaze to evolve and darken over time as tea seeps into the fissures. This bowl embraces the wabi-sabi aesthetic, finding beauty in the natural movement of the liquid glaze and the raw, unrefined earth visible at the base.
With an open mouth and a capacity of around 350ml, the bowl provides sufficient space to move the whisk and build a smooth foam.
The included chasen and chashaku are made from natural bamboo. The whisk has 80 tines to blend matcha and water into a uniform texture properly. The scoop is curved in the usual way for measuring matcha powder – a scoop is about 1 gram.
The set includes:
- A natural bamboo whisk (chasen) for frothing matcha smoothly.
- A bamboo scoop (chashaku) to measure the right portion.
- The Hagi Celadon chawan.
NOTE:
• Chawan: Our Chawans are handcrafted. Variations in glaze and color make each piece unique. The Chawan delivered may not be exactly as pictured, but will be crafted in the same style, shape, and spirit.
• Chasen: Tine tips of Chasen (bamboo matcha whisk) will unfurl upon first use. Store with tines facing up or place on a whisk holder to protect and maintain the tines’ shape. Care Instructions: Before first use, soak the whisk in hot water for 2 minutes to soften the tines. After use, rinse under running water, then set out to dry.
• Chashaku Care Instructions: Wipe with a clean cloth. Dampen a cloth if necessary.
