Handmade Jianshui Clay Lid Holder

$24.00

This handmade lid rest (盖置 – Gai Zhi) is crafted from Jianshui Zitao (建水紫陶), the unglazed clay pottery of southern Yunnan, by the ceramic artist Xue (薛). In Gong Fu Cha, a lid rest is a small but useful piece: it gives the lid of your gaiwan or teapot a clean place to rest between infusions or when you pour water in, and protects the lid from collecting dust.

The shape of this lid rest is intentionally irregular, closer to a weathered stone or hollowed piece of old wood than a standard tea accessory. Openings of different sizes cut through the body, giving it a natural, porous look. The surface is earthy and textured, with warm reddish clay tones.

Each piece is hand-shaped, and no two are alike. The holes, curves, and overall outline will vary from one lid rest to the next. Some will look more like a small rock formation, others more like an old root or eroded mountain piece. That’s part of the appeal. It doesn’t feel factory-made or overly polished — it has its own shape, its own small personality.

Despite its sculptural look, it is a practical object. The raised form keeps the lid off the table, while the openings make the piece feel light rather than heavy. It works well with gaiwans, small teapots, and other Gong Fu Cha teaware.

A simple piece, but not a plain one – useful on the tea table, handmade in a way that makes every lid rest truly unique.
