Fuding Shou Mei White Tea Cake, 2014

$69.00

DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, THIS TEA IS SOLD OUT.

A young monk and the wise tea master Lao Cha sat atop a mountain in Fujian province, slowly sipping Shou Mei White Tea and admiring the sunset. The entire time the monk kept talking, endlessly asking the master questions and telling him one meaningless story after another.

— Slow down. Listen to the tea. You will hear the mountains, the fog, the streams, the changing seasons… If you listen carefully and intently, you can hear the microcosm of this area. You will be able to feel the space being filled with minerals. This tea is too precious to waste on trivial chatter. This tea is a journey.

This tea from the 2014 harvest only gets better with age, so it has been compressed into the cake form. This way of processing this white tea allows it to mature, and with time the taste only becomes smoother and sweeter.

Fuding Shou Mei White Tea comes from the original birthplace of white tea — Fuding in Fujian Province. The tea grew in mineral-rich soil and surrounded by fog, which adds plenty of micronutrients to the finished product.

White tea in Fuding is compared to a treasure that people cherish and sip consciously and with great appreciation. It is said that tea is only the beginning of the journey, and with age, it transforms into medicine.
There is a famous saying for white tea in China: "Tea, in its first year, is still a tea. In its third year, it's a treasure, and in its seventh year - a medicine". Indeed, white tea has a rich history tied to its medicinal values. In fact, only a few decades ago, aged white tea was only sold as medicinal tea. At the end of the last century, the craze for "aged" tea started. It was then that the aged white tea acquired collectors' value and fully revealed its marketing potential.

Unlike other types of white tea, Shou Mei tea only uses the grown, mature leaves of the tea plant. It gives an extra dose of mellowness and a thick, chewy mouthfeel full of sweetness. The surface of our Fuding Shou Mei White Tea Cake is a mix of dark yellow and intense brown, with visible white hair buds. The leaves hide a delicate, sweet fragrance. Once submerged in water, they produce a clear, bright yellow to orange tea soup. This Shou Mei tea has a mellow, thick mouthfeel and a sweet taste with honey and sun-dried notes. You will enjoy its long-lasting finish that melts away in a lingering sweet aftertaste.

Fuding is a core production area and the most significant production base for white tea in China. Its history with tea dates back to the Song dynasty, more than a thousand years ago. As of 2004, the Fuding White tea has been declared a product of PDO (protected designation of origin).

The name of the tea comes from the shape of the loose tea leaves, which are said to resemble the long eyebrows of Shouxing, the god of longevity. With its rich history and medicinal properties, this tea makes a great gift!

A Berry Delicious Tea

This is my first bing cha of white tea and I can confidently say that this is one of my favorite white teas to date. With its wonderful syrup like sweetness with notes of berries and raisins this is an amazing tea to wind down with. Towards the end of the session you can still taste the bold sweetness of the first infusion for a good while.

I found a bee in my tea cake.

So, as you can see from my title, I found a dead bee that looked as if it had been frozen in time in my tea cake. Very interesting, was not expecting to see something like that. But, sometimes stuff like that happens and is no fault of the producer or the company who sells it. The tea to me had a more vegetable taste then I expected. Didn't taste like white tea, but it's been aged, so the taste of course is going to change. I'm quite new to tea, especially aged tea, so I'm probably not the best for indicating proper notes. None the less though, I still enjoyed it. It also has a body or mind effect that differs from other teas which is very nice. Almost like a mild high. Overall would purchase again.

Oh my, a bee?! Well, I take it as a sign of the tea's sweetness:)

Thank you for the review, Kaleb! Glad that you enjoyed the tea:)

Love this tea.

I was curious about how a white puerh type tea cake would taste like since I’m a big puerh/oolong fan. This cake is wonderful. It is sweet and mellow with good throat feel. The after taste lingers quite pleasantly and everything only gets better with subsequent infusions. I’ve gotten 8 infusions using Gongfu style brewing before the taste started to diminish. Im very happy and impressed!!!

Grand!

This is an amazing tea which is well rounded, complex, and goes down syrupy sweet. Thay being said, I doubt I will get a cake of it. Altogether a nice treat from time to time.
