Handmade Silver Shiboridashi (Silver-Lined Arita-Yaki Porcelain)

$149.00

This Silver-Lined Shiboridashi brings together fine materials, traditional techniques, and beautiful design, making it well-suited for brewing high-quality teas.

The body of the houhin is made from Arita-yaki porcelain (有田焼磁器), produced in Arita, a small town in Saga Prefecture with over 400 years of history in porcelain-making. It was here, in the early 17th century, that kaolin clay was first discovered in Japan, allowing local artisans to produce porcelain for the first time. Arita ware is known for its elegant, often minimalist forms and artistry.

The vessel is first shaped in pure white porcelain, then hand-carved using the Tobikanna technique (飛鉋) – a method of decorating the surface with rhythmic, fine markings created as the potter turns the piece on the wheel. The result is a texture that plays with light and invites touch. After carving, a layer of silver is brushed onto the surface, and the piece is fired again, fusing the metal with the porcelain and giving it a subtle, luminous finish highlighting the carved pattern. Each piece is carved by hand, so no two are exactly alike.

The silver coating isn't just for aesthetics. Silver is known to affect the taste of water. Many tea drinkers feel it makes the water feel softer, which brings out the tea's natural sweetness. The light interior invites you to enjoy the vibrant green color of the tea as it steeps.

This shape is a blend of Shiboridashi and Houhin. Houhin (宝瓶) is a traditional Japanese brewing vessel, ideal for Japanese teas. Similar in spirit to a Shiboridashi, it slightly differs in shape and filtering style – houhin are usually taller and feature a built-in strainer for cleaner pouring.

Capacity: 120ml

Material: Silver-lined Arita-Yaki Porcelain (内外に銀を施した有田焼磁器)

Due to fine filtering, this shiboridashi features a slow pour, which is especially well-suited for Japanese green teas.

NOTE: This shiboridashi is handcrafted. It makes each piece unique and one of a kind. Thus, the shibo that you will receive may slightly differ from the photos.

NOTE: Avoid using detergents when cleaning.
