Handmade Wood-fired "Weathered Rock" Teacup

$57.00

This tea cup is crafted from high-iron content clay from Dehua. The textured surface and its faceted design are inspired by the weathered rocks in nature, giving the cup a rough and earthy yet sophisticated look. Just like the stone is slowly shaped by natural forces and the passage of time, the teacup has a natural cracked effect that feels both rough and gentle, combining a solid feeling and a simple texture.

The facets, similar to a diamond's surface, create various visual effects depending on the angle of the light, making the cup seem to dance and sparkle as you move it. The irregular surface contrasts beautifully with its sturdy, classical form, merging tradition and modernity in a solid, organic design.

A Jie

The cup is crafted using the centuries-old wood-firing method – a traditional process in the history of Chinese ceramics production. Using wood as the sole burner material, the kiln will develop temperatures around 1300C that are at the base of each product's unique features. The lack of precise control of the temperature, airflow, and ash deposition makes the kiln master's skills and experience essential for the successful burning of the products. They also guarantee that no two pieces will be exactly the same. During the firing process, ash from the wood sticks to the items' surface, resulting in natural coloring and glazing effects that can't be achieved in modern electric kilns. The result is a one-of-a-kind tea cup born from the combined impact of the elements — earth, fire, air, and, of course, the kiln.

Our teacup has been designed and crafted by A Jie, a potter with over 11 years of experience in ceramic design and production. A Jie's studio in Dehua, Fujian, blends a serene Zen atmosphere with a modern touch, much like the cup itself. During our last visit, A Jie shared how the natural qualities of the iron-rich Dehua clay, combined with the wood-firing process, improve air permeability and soften the water. It is also at the heart of creating pieces of unique character, as A Jie believes the wood-firing process instills a soul inside his creations.

A Jie's Studio

This tea cup, much like the larger tea vessels A Jie is known for, is a representation of his years of experimentation and artistic searches. Its textured surface, organic design, and comforting lines will make it a preferred addition to a tea ritual and a worthy addition to your teaware collection.
