This Arita-Yaki Porcelain Shiboridashi Teapot combines expressive design and function and is especially well-suited for brewing Japanese green teas. Shiboridashi (絞り出し) is a traditional Japanese brewing vessel. Its name translates to "to squeeze out", describing how the lid helps to extract every last drop of tea. Wide and more flat than a Chinese gaiwan, it is used to brew low-temperature teas such as high-grade Gyokuro or Sencha.
The blue splashes on the surface are done in the Fukizumi style (吹墨). In this decorative technique, the glaze is blown or flicked onto the porcelain surface, often using fingers, thin pipes, or brushes. In this piece, the blue was applied by flicking the glaze with the fingers, creating an organic pattern that feels spontaneous. No two pieces turn out the same!
The vessel is made from Arita-yaki porcelain (有田焼磁器), crafted in the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture. Arita has been a center of Japanese porcelain since the early 17th century, when Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong (李參平) discovered kaolin clay deposits in the area, enabling the production of porcelain in Japan. The region became known for its fine, white porcelain—light yet durable and perfect for teaware. Arita ware balances clean, minimalist forms with artistic glazing, and this Shiboridashi is a good example of that combination.
Made of porcelain, this brewing vessel doesn't influence the flavor of the tea. – Porcelain is a neutral material that lets the tea speak for itself. It also doesn't retain heat as aggressively as clay, which helps prevent overcooking delicate leaves. The light interior makes it easy to enjoy the bright green color of the tea as it steeps – another small but satisfying detail.
