When it comes to Yixing Da Hong Pao clay, there are many controversies. Many people believe that this type of clay is so rare that it is almost extinct, and therefore a Yixing Da Hong Pao teapot should either cost a fortune or a fake. Others believe that this type of ZiSha clay is widely available, and the truth is that both statements are factual.

The confusion comes from people referring to any one of the few distinct types of clay while using the same name.

• There are, indeed, lots of fake Dahongpao clay teapots on the market. Those are a mixture of ZiSha and other unauthentic and unregulated clays, iron oxide powder, or even artificial coloring to give a teapot a deep red color. Such unnatural deep red color is a good indicator of a fake "Dahongpao clay".

• The rare, almost extinct Da Hong Pao clay that some people refer to is the Hong Ni Da Hong Pao. This clay is dark red (when fired) and very porous, and though it is still mined in extremely small amounts, it is so rare that it can be easier to find it in museums rather than in personal collections.

• Zhu Ni Da Hong Pao (朱泥大红袍), from which this teapot is made, is the authentic yixing clay, and it is still available, though it commands a higher price. It's a special grade of Zhu Ni ore, and the ratio of dahongpao to the regular zhuni ore is about 1:100. Once fired, Zhu Ni Da Hong Pao clay is of deep red-orange color, hence the name (Big Red Robe). The color comes from a higher than average Zhu Ni level of iron oxide. And because of the high shrinkage rate and lower level of aluminum oxide, it is more difficult to fire it without breaking, making the finished teapot even more valuable.

"Da Hong Pao" clay is high-density clay, and it does not absorb fragrances as much as Zi Ni or Duanni and preserves more delicate teas' aromas without overcooking them. It will complement fragrant teas, like lightly oxidized Oolongs, and work well with darker teas as well, like with Hong Cha and Pu-erhs. The dense walls of the teapot give these teas a good opportunity to fully present themselves. 

 

The shape of this teapot is called Bian Xi Shi (扁西施) – Flat Xi Shi. It's a variation of the classical Xi Shi Yixing teapot. Xi Shi was a famous beauty of ancient China. This classical shape is not only beautiful but also practical. It gives ample room to tea, allowing it to open up fully as well as maximizes the area where the water is in contact with the leaves, allowing the full taste extraction. The flattened body lets the pot cool off fast enough so the tea won't get overcooked

 

Our Da Hong Pao Zhu Ni clay teapot is made by a member of Jiangsu Ceramic Association, Wang Xiaoping – a craftsman and talented pottery master.
