Unglazed "Jade Porcelain" Gaiwan ("Storm")

$109.00

Made from high-quality, world-renowned Kaolin clay from Dehua in Fujian Province, China, this Gaiwan is unglazed and fired at a high temperature of 1380 degrees. Smooth to the touch, matte, slightly porous material will add to your tea experience. The tactile finish resembles Jade, giving it the name “Jade Porcelain” in China. This particular quality is seen in its translucency when holding the gaiwan up against the light.

Porcelain gaiwan is excellent for light teas, like green tea light oolongs, white tea, and yellow tea. The thin walls ensure that these delicate teas don't become over-brewed. The porcelain highlights the subtle flavors and brings out the beautiful pale colors of the tea brew.

Due to the low amounts of iron oxide in the clay, Dehua clays fire to a bright white hue. Blanc de Chine translates as “White from China”. The embroidery is plated in 18K gold and results in a “relief” effect on the gaiwan. Waves and storms have long been used in China as a symbol of imperial service. Indeed, the fine and intricate artwork of this gaiwan will catch the eye of even the finest teaware aesthete.
