Finally, the leaves are slowly infused with the smoke to the core during the baking and re-baking. The finished tea is called "Smoked Souchong" (烟小种 – Yan Xiao Zhong) and holds the unique scent of smoky pine. This smoky fragrance is very well-balanced, complementing the tea's natural sweetness. Its high, intense aroma balances notes of dried dates and longan with the signature pine smoke fragrance. They pick them in the morning and spread them to wither in the shade. After that, they roll them till the juice starts to ooze out of the leaves. They then leave the tea mass to oxidize for hours before the final drying stage. The processing results in the tea with a complex, sweet taste, hiding honey and ripe fruit notes. It pairs with a mellow, rich mouthfeel and a long, satisfying finish.

The signature fragrance of dried longan fruit can be traced only to Zhengshan Xiaozhong, which grows in the core production area of Tongmu Guan. During the night, jasmine flowers open, releasing an exquisite fragrance, and the scenting takes place.

In the process of making this tea, tea buds get scented with the jasmine flowers a total of 5 times, each time replacing the used jasmine buds with new ones. Lastly, only the most potent jasmine flowers get added to the finished tea.

Sipping on our Jasmine (Jin Ya) Black Tea will be nothing short of a sweet, mellow, and deeply aromatic experience. The black tea brings sweet, fruity notes, and the jasmine flowers mix in their fragrance. The jasmine naturally balances the mood and calms the mind with its enchanting fragrance. The clear, bright-orange tea soup has a smooth, mellow entrance and feels comfortable. The long-lasting finish, with its returning sweetness, will keep reminding you about this tea long after you're done drinking it.

Making Jasmine black tea is a laborious process that takes time and effort. Some producers would use scented oils or flavorings to save both, then scent the tea leaves during their processing. Unlike most black teas, which are finished in heated dryers, this tea is spread out on bamboo trays and dried under the sun. The process is slow and gentle. Low temperatures gradually draw moisture from the leaves, allowing them to retain more of their natural aromatics and sugars. Sun-drying gives the tea a bright, honey-floral character and keeps the tannins soft and rounded. Instead of the typical malty notes, you get a clean profile with a naturally occurring fruity sweetness.

While a standard Dian Hong uses high oven heat to completely lock in its flavor, Shai Hong's gentle drying leaves the leaf's natural enzymes intact. The leaves undergo a long process of withering (up to 20 hours). The next step is rolling, where the leaves are pressed in a circular motion. It helps release the inner moisture and further oxidize the leaves. The leaves are then placed in large sieves and shaken up and down to prevent entanglement during the filtering stage. Repeated kneading comes next, which further breaks the cell walls, followed by another stage of oxidation for 2-3 hours. Bright in the cup, deeply honeyed and malty – nothing else in China tasted like it. Within a year, the tea was being exported to Hong Kong. Within a few decades, Fengqing was known across the country. The craft itself is now registered as Chinese national intangible cultural heritage and, since 2022, has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

This tea, called "China Red" (极品中国红) as a celebration of China, is the flagship of the Yunnan Dianhong Group – the most prestigious Dian Hong producer in China. It was developed in 2007 and, in March 2015, was presented as a state gift to Prince William during his visit to Yunnan. What sets it apart from other Dian Hong teas is that it isn't a single-cultivar tea. The Dianhong Group's tea masters draw on eighteen different cultivars from their Fengqing gardens, anchored in Yunnan Da Ye Zhong (云南大叶种 — Yunnan large-leaf) and layered with smaller-leaf varietals such as Mei Zhan ( 梅占), Huang Dan (黄旦), and Zi Juan (紫娟). The large-leaf material gives the cup its body and depth; the smaller-leaf material brings the high, lifted aromatics. Together, they create a beautiful melody of taste.

The leaves come from a single high-mountain garden, sitting at about 1,640 meters, grown on red-yellow mountain soil under near-constant mist. Only the first-flush buds and youngest leaves are taken, picked by hand at dawn while the dew is still on the leaf, so the sun never has a chance to dry them. The finished leaf is straight, dark, and oily, with the gold-tipped buds.

The liquor is clear, deep amber-orange, with a luminous gold ring (金圈) along the rim. The aroma is layered and unusually high for a black tea – honey comes first, then sweet bread, then orchid, and a thread of osmanthus underneath. The body is silken and full. The taste is fruity-sweet, with just a touch of malt. It never turns astringent.

This is a rare black tea. Not cheap, but totally worth the price. Probably not a daily drinker, but a fitting tea for a special occasion.

• Producer: Yunnan Dianhong Group (滇红集团)
• Place of Origin: Fengqing County, Lincang, Yunnan, China

• Altitude: 1650m

• Harvest Date: March 2026

• Picking Standard: One bud and one leaf

• Aroma: Honey, sweet bread, orchid, osmanthus

• Taste: Silken and full.
