"Big Dipper" Bei Dou Wuyi Oolong Tea

$51.00

DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, THIS TEA IS SOLD OUT.

Wuyi Mountain has long been renowned for its Wuyi oolong tea, with its unforgettable Rock Ryme – Yan Yun. One day the Emperor sent a letter to the Wise Tea Master Lao Cha, asking for the most balanced cliff tea.

Lao Cha sent back a small jar of the Big Dipper. At first, the Emperor was sad to see such a small amount of tea. But as soon as he drank it, he realized the tea leaves hold within all the misty rocky slopes of the Wuyi Mountains. As many times as he brewed it, the taste wouldn't subside. Flavorful, mineral, roasted, and sweet. It became a Wuyishan favorite.

The Wuyi Mountain region is a place of 39 peaks, 99 valleys, and a river with nine bends. Though not incredibly high, fog and mist always shroud the mountain peaks. The moisture gets accumulated on the rocky sides of the mountains and then flows down these rocks to the roots of the tea plants, enriching them with minerals and creating the unique Yan Yun (岩韵 – "rock rhyme") taste, for which "Big Dipper" Bei Dou Oolong Tea is famous.

Yan Yun is the mouthwatering sensation we get after sipping a high-quality, high-mountain craft tea. It reflects the influence of the mountainous terroir and the unique combination of trace elements in the soil that the tree absorbs during its yearly growth cycle. This mesmerizing and captivating sensation entices us to continue our tea ritual. With each gongfu-style brew, the oolong tea taste transforms. Gradually, we begin to notice more and more layers of flavor and aroma. Indeed, these layers result from the growing process of yancha and the techniques farmers use to process the tea.

Our Bei Dou Wuyi Oolong Tea is a prime example of Wuyi Rock Tea or yancha from Northern Fujian. This perfectly brewed cup of yancha has a well-balanced melange of mineral notes, a comforting roasted taste, and a complex bouquet embodying an elegant sweet and floral component that gradually evolves to more woody and fruity base notes. You can taste the iconic mineral taste and the lingering Yan Yun from the very first sip.

The clear and transparent orange-yellow tea liquor gracefully transforms with each sip, easily lasting a dozen infusions. The medium roast of this Cliff Tea gently warms the body and invigorates the soul throughout the Gong Fu session, leaving a lingering aftertaste of dried fruits on the tip of the tongue.

Our "Big Dipper" grows in an area called Zheng Yan, the prime part of the famous Wuyi Shan area in Fujian Province. It is a National Reserve with a strict prohibition of pesticides or herbicides usage. Naturally, this makes our Bei Dou Wuyi Oolong a pure organic tea.

To make this Wuyi Oolong tea, farmers employ traditional techniques, which they have been passing down for generations. Then, they roast the loose leaf oolong tea three times over a wood charcoal fire, infusing it with the warming roasted taste and aroma. Finally, the tea artisans can achieve an incredibly well-balanced yancha with a mouthwatering finish.

Favorite Oolong Ever!

Like every tea received from Path of Cha, this-former-coffee-only-drinker enjoys the aroma as well as the flavor of multiple “wettings” of our newest oolong, bei dou “Big Dipper” Wuyi oolong.
At first, I couldn’t tell if the scent was fruity or smoky. The taste from brief steeping was lightly roasty, with hints of fruit.
A few minutes of steeping later, the aroma was that of an amazing late summer garden and the gentle but complex flavor is the most exquisite minerality I’ve tasted in anything but a few French wines!
Overstepping only makes me want to turn the tea leaves into some kind of perfume :)

A Favorite in My Collection

This Big Dipper Oolong is a favorite in my collection. When I have a friend over and I am introducing tea, this is often the tea that I choose to reel them in. Everyone has enjoyed every time. The taste is complex, robust, satisfying.

Great Yancha!

I'm a big fan of yancha, and I've tried many different cliff teas from many different vendors. I have to say that this one is among my most favorites! It is very rich, complex, fruity, mineral – hits all the right spots.
On a different note, it's a pity that 'Path of Cha' doesn't have a Rou Gui in their collection. It would be a great addition to their otherwise awesome Wuyi collection.

Very good Yancha

I have the "Wuyi" Oolong tea collection and have been drinking this tea a lot recently. The Big Dipper tea smells so nice, like red flowers with pollen. The taste is robust, with a woody and kind of sandy finish. It stays in my mouth for a long time and grows with every cup. I have not had a tea like this before. Please try this strong Yancha!
